James Hardie Installation Phase 1: Planning

James Hardie Installation Phase 1: Planning

The first phase of the James Hardie installation process starts before any physical work begins, but it helps set the foundation for a positive installation experience.

Choosing the Right Contractor

When looking for the best local James Hardie siding contractor, the best thing you can do is search for a James Hardie Elite Preferred Contractor, like Siding Express. This designation means that we meet James Hardie’s high standards by complying with the manufacturer’s best installation practices, maintaining a satisfactory record with the BBB, carrying workman’s compensation insurance, and more.

If you’re interested in working with us for your James Hardie installation, the first step is to meet with us for a free consultation. We’ll use this time to answer any questions you have, show you product samples, and talk about your project’s timeline.

Choosing and Ordering Materials

Once you choose Siding Express as your contractor, the next step is to decide which James Hardie siding material you want us to install. One of the many reasons for James Hardie’s popularity is the wide variety of styles and designs that are available.

With options ranging from board and batten styles to scalloped shingles, and everything in between, you’re sure to find an option you love in almost any color imaginable. Once you decide which color and style you want, we’ll give you a final proposal that covers the cost of labor and materials.

After you have a chance to review and approve the proposal, we’ll order the materials and officially get your installation project on our schedule.

James Hardie Installation Phase 2: PreparationJames Hardie Installation Phase 2: Preparation

Once you receive confirmation of your installation date, there are a few things you can do around your home to help prepare for a seamless installation.

Make Sure There Is Clear Access to a Power Outlet

Our installation crew will need access to power for our tools during the installation. If possible, try to have a clear, 20-amp circuit outlet that is easily accessible.

Prepare the Outside of Your Home

To make the installation as quick and efficient as possible, please move anything out of the way that may block our crew from accessing your exterior walls like patio furniture or outdoor decorations.

To help protect your yard or garden, you can also use landscaping canvas to wrap around shrubbery and other plants. Finally, consider mowing your grass shortly before the installation. This will make it easier for our crew to find small debris like nails when cleaning up after the project is finished.

Prepare the Inside of Your Home

It’s also a good idea to remove items hanging on your walls or sitting on shelves before the start of your project. It’s normal for walls to shake when installing new siding, so removing these items can help prevent damage.

Make Arrangements for Pets

If you have pets, they might find the loud noises of the installation to be stressful. To help them avoid unnecessary anxiety, you may consider finding alternate arrangements for them when our installation crew is at your house.

Of course, we understand that’s not always possible. Whether you have pets or not, we will always do our best to limit distractions to your family while working on your home.

James Hardie Installation Process - 2James Hardie Installation Phase 3: Work Begins

The final phase of a James Hardie installation is when our crew gets to work updating your home.

Preparation

We’ll start by taking safety precautions to prevent damage. This includes wearing protective gear to protect our crew and setting up a safe workspace for our installers and your family. We’ll also use this time to cover your doors and windows to prevent the risk of damage during the siding installation.

Removing Your Old Siding

The next step is to remove your old siding, which will help to ensure that your new James Hardie siding can be installed correctly. When removing your old siding, we’ll use caution, being careful not to cause damage to the area beneath it.

During this time, we’ll also remove any trim, fascia, and soffits on your home, before disposing of the old materials.

Checking for and Repairing Damage

Once your old siding is completely removed, we’ll take time to inspect your exterior. Depending on the age of your old siding, there may be damage to the exterior walls or foundation. For example, it’s not uncommon to notice signs of rot once removing old siding.

When we discover damage, we’ll discuss what we find with you, then we’ll make any necessary repairs before moving forward with the installation. Failing to fix this damage could lead to future issues with your James Hardie siding, so it’s best to be proactive now.

Laying Out the New Materials

After we’ve finished making any necessary repairs, we’ll lay out your new siding material, where we’ll take measurements and size the new siding so it’s ready for installation. This is also when we’ll prep trim and other siding accessories.

Installing a New Vapor Barrier

Next, we’ll install a new vapor barrier around your home’s exterior, which is critical for protecting your home against future water damage. James Hardie siding itself offers incredible water resistance, but using a vapor barrier gives you added protection and peace of mind, no matter what kind of Missouri weather comes our way.

This is also when we’ll install special tape around doors and windows to create a watertight seal for extra protection.

Installing the New Siding Materials

Now comes the most exciting part, when we start installing your new James Hardie siding! For starters, we’ll install metal flashing to help route water away from vulnerable areas of your exterior. Then, we’ll install trim boards, which will help give your siding a clean appearance.

Once we’re done with that, we’ll install your James Hardie siding planks. After we’re finished, we’ll do paint touch-ups, if needed, and add caulk for a nice, finished look that you’ll love.

Clean-Up

Our goal is to always make it look like we were never at your home. Once the installation is complete, we’ll clean up after ourselves, removing debris and hauling your old siding materials away. We’ll also do a final walk-through to ensure your new siding looks perfect.
